Why Maintenance Matters

Tools and Materials

• 3M Metal Finishing Pad for removing rust and polishing the blade.
• Max Wax from Darkwood for a protective layer against rust.
• Small fine file for blade and hilt nicks.
• Applicator cloth for oils and wax.
• Optional tools include gun oil wipes, drywall sanding sponges, rust erasing block, scissors, electrical tape, rubber mallet, razor box knife, wood restorer, and mink oil.

Removing Nicks

Use the file, pushing in one direction, only slightly crosswise, down the length of the blade. Do not pull back and forth or scrub in one location.

Removing Rust

Use the red hand-pad. Pushing, pulling, or scrubbing with the hand pad is acceptable for rust removal.

Caution from the source: the red hand-pad and file can leave scratches on highly polished or blackened surfaces.

Final Protective Treatment

Rub the entire article with a light layer of Max Wax, including the hilt, handle, pommel, and blade.

Pro tip from the source: do not wash the cloth after use. The more wax in the cloth, the better it coats later.
